The Church of Saint Mary is located on one of the highest points in Ushguli and it is also the home to the remnants of one of the most ancient fortresses of the Svaneti, with 37 Svan towers, dating back to the reign of Queen Tamar. The views and surrounding landscape are stunning. Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This five day trek in the wild Svaneti Mountains of Georgia is a great choice for those who love to hike on quiet mountain trails with daily views of high summits and glaciers. The terrain on the trail is mixed and ranges from easy paths to rough, rock-strewn climbs as you get closer to the glaciers. The amount of ascent and descent provided in the itinerary should not be underestimated. On several days you will hike above 2500m as you cross high mountain passes from one valley to another along the Transcaucasian Trail. Doing some practice hikes before the trip with your pack and boots is strongly recommended to help you prepare for this adventure!

What will I need to carry?

You only need to carry a daypack each day, including your waterproofs and at least 2L of water, as the rest of your luggage will be transferred by vehicle from one accommodation to the next. Please check our Kit List section for recommendations on what to pack for this trip.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Highly Remote Environments: Factors to consider

This trip travels through very remote areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited and evacuation may take a significant amount of time. In some locations, medical facilities may provide only basic treatment, and further travel may be required to reach a hospital capable of providing more advanced care.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, evacuation may involve multiple stages and different forms of transport before reaching appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may be unreliable for significant portions of this trip and communication may rely on satellite devices carried by your guides.

Your guides are trained and experienced in operating in remote environments and will manage the group carefully throughout the journey. However, due to the remoteness of these locations, access to external support may be limited and delays to medical care should be expected.

Before booking, consider your personal health and comfort travelling in locations where medical care and evacuation options may be limited or delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling. If you have a medical condition that may require rapid access to specialist care, regular monitoring, or emergency treatment, this type of remote travel may not be suitable without careful planning and medical advice.

Your travel insurance must cover the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation.

What a special place this country will have in my heart. Full of history, mountains, amazing food and beautiful people too. I was lucky enough to have an amazing group for this trip and the two guides Sandro & Levani really made the trip what it was too and they're a credit to MBA.

My trip was in September 26 with Nugo and Giorgi, my 5th trip and my wife's first, we both loved it. Guides were superb, both on the hikes and the tricky driving. The group worked really well, everyone had a slightly different sense of humour, and there were loads of laughs. Hiking was great, superb views, good weather and welcome options for coffee and cake in remote parts of the mountains.

This was my second trip with MBA and it was incredibly well organised. Our guides Sandro and Levani were amazing showing us the Georgian culture and accommodating all our requests. The food was great and the guesthouses were comfortable. The views from our hikes were breathtaking and the group was really great. I would really recommend this trip.

This trip to Georgia was absolutely stunning on all aspects. The hikes were challenging but always achievable and lead to the most amazing views. Our guides Levani and Sandro were incredible from start to finish, they are a great pairing and really enhanced all of our experiences on the trip. Luckily for us the weather was perfect the whole week. Would highly recommend this trip.

Amazing trek, food, group, and vibes throughout. Sandro and Levani were incredibly knowledgeable and energetic, kept a great vibe throughout the tour and really brought the Georgian culture and geogrpahy to life for us. 5* absolutely brilliant.

Had the best time in georgia! The guides sandro and levani are second to none, a true representation of the people of georgia, kind, paitent and proud of their heritage. The hikes themselves are a fair challenge for all levels of fitness and the reward of some of the most spectacular views ive personally ever witnessed. Accommodations on the trip were comfortable and I felt settled everywhere we stayed. I experienced a lovely blend of challanege, culture and couldn't of asked for a better group of people to have experienced this with.

The hike itself was great, and we had excellent and entertaining guides. I can’t recommend this adventure enough. The guides went above and beyond what I expected.

I had a brilliant time on this trip despite the weather! The hikes were great (albeit with fewer views than usual!), definitely breathing hard in places as we had some fit people in the group to try to keep up with! Though none of the terrain covered was technically challenging. Our guides Sandro and Levan were brilliant and were fab at filling us in on local history and traditions as well as being great fun. The food was generally exceptional and I certainly never went hungry! In fact our group felt guilty most breakfasts and dinnertimes with the amount of food left over! I can't recommend this trip enough, the Svaneti region is absolutely stunning and, if anything, the inclement weather we experienced actually added to the ambience of the mountains!

  • Katrina N.

Georgia is worthy of a place on your bucket list. The mountains are beautiful, the villages packed with history and the guest houses warm and welcoming. Our guides, Giorgi and Nugo kept us both safe and entertained and our group gelled well and got along brilliantly. If the food lacked variety, it was at least hearty and filling and powered us up to the mountain passes the next day. And from there, we could really see the scenic views of this country. Go and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

  • Fantastic trip, the guides make it what it is

Saw the previous reviews and booked this fairly last minute as my first MBA trip. It was perfectly pitched at level 3. The guides were hilarious and the food was amazing and I lucked out with a great group.
  • Mountain trek in Svaneti

I just got back from this trip in Georgia, with Nugo and Giorgi as our two excellent guides. I am a solo traveller, female aged 54 and it was my first MBA. It was absolutely brilliant and I recommend it to anyone who wants an adventure, likes hiking, incredible scenery, lovely people, and feels like doing something a bit different from the average holiday. The guides were fantastic, so knowledgeable, so patient, so kind, so supportive, and good humoured. We had a lot of laughs. The group was quite mixed ability and the age range was 28-68 but it was no problem at all, everyone got along really well. I loved it.
  • The trip to the Caucasus

    Elaine M. September 2026
The trip to the Caucasus was overall a great trip. The guides were excellent, very knowledgeable, helpful and good company. The accommodation on the whole was acceptable, clean and roomy, however a couple were quite cold overnight. The food was all homemade and nourishing, however it would have been nice if the menus had varied from place to place. The packed lunches were a little limited and samey. The actual treks were very interesting, however, they were challenging in places and I felt our pace was rather too quick at times considering the steepness of some of the climbs and the descents. I think the rating or moderate needs to be more clear and should state that people need to be of good fitness to be able to enjoy them. On the longest day we climbed more or less straight up for over 2 hours. However, my main criticism is that we were not met at Kutaisi airport by our taxi and so had to make our own way to the hotel. We did receive a whatsapp once we were at the hotel and logged onto their wifi telling us that the taxi was going to be late due to traffic and weather, however, we did not have any wifi whilst in the airport. I do think someone could have called one of us rather than send a whatsapp, as it was late at night and we had had a rather arduous journey.
  • Beautiful country, excellent trip, very fun time

    Lucy M. September 2026
Fantastic week hiking the valleys and mountain passes of the Svaneti region. The epic scenery was expected, but the experience was made so much more by our brilliant guides Sandro and Levani. They looked after us so well, introducing us to the history and culture of the area, all the while making sure we knew what was ahead of us each day and even carrying my backpack up the steep bit on a hangover day (watch out for the Chacha!) I was pretty much the slowest in our group but I never felt pressured to keep up and was allowed to enjoy the hikes and the views at my own pace. There were some totally unexpected experiences thrown in too - going to a cinema in a tiny mountain village and dancing the night away in a remote ‘nightclub’. Such a fun week with brilliant memories made.
  • Landscapes and culture

    Ian R. September 2026
This was my 6th MBA trip and they keep getting better and better. This trip was an amazing experience of mountains, glaciers, villages and culture. Walking village to village was a great way to make the most of day and to see the local villages and sights. The guides, Levan and Sandro were absolutely brilliant - great guides, thoughtful, and helpful. They set a good pace to suit all members of the group (which could spilt into a faster and slower group when needed) and they explained the local culture and traditions. The walks were a perfect length and difficulty - challenging but certainly not over stretching, but there are some steep sections. The views were breathtaking. The food was excellent and all the guest houses were clean and friendly - most were just our MBA group. Vegetarians are well catered for in Georgia. The local villages and Svan Towers were stunning to see from the paths above them as we walked into them. Most walks had a cafe / rest area selling drinks and food, which was very welcome after a morning’s climb. Evening meals were fantastic. Sandro and Levin encouraged a great group camaraderie - everyone got on well, with constant laughter and chatter. We had good weather - two amazing sunny days, and some rain / showers over 3 days - but all the walks were still great fun and enjoyable. Adding a few extra days onto the trip in Kutaisi or Tbilisi is recommended. The local MBA team were great to deal with in booking extra nights in the hotel and arranging airport transfers at any hour.
  • What an adventure!

    Monika O. September 2026
Our guides Levani and Sandro gave us a true taste of Georgia! Fantastic trip, amazing views, good company, good food, introduction to Georgian wine and chacha. It was my birthday during the trip - which I wanted to keep quiet…but instead there was a fantastic birthday cake, shots and night out. Definitely a trip to remember.
  • This was an incredible trip

    Charlotte S. September 2026
This was an incredible trip from start to finish. The landscape was exquisite and the trip is appropriately rated as moderate. I knew the Svaneti hiking and views would be great, but what really made the trip was our group and incredible guides; Sandro and Levan did an amazing job coordinating all of our needs, managing our paces, and keeping everything fun with stories, tamadas, and stargazing. მადლობა!
  • Stunning views and amazing food

    Jennifer G. September 2026
Incredible trek with stunning views, fascinating culture, and wonderful food. Very doable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Levani was a fantastic guide and our group could not have gotten along better. Could not recommend it more highly.

    Alice F. September 2026
Sandro and Levani were great guides, they helped me get my luggage back in Mestia after BA hadn't put it on the flight which was a huge relief. The food was amazing and huge portions. The views were totally worth the effort to get to the top of the mountains.

The 2 guides avani & Sandro were super good. It’s down as level 3 moderate I would question that as a quite experienced trekker I feel more like level 4 however it was really good . Food at times particularly breakfast Dry bread and cold boiled eggs regularly didn’t go down to well but the climbs were good challenges.

Very well organised & run trip. The views were great, but the people made it!
  • Fantastic Trip in a Beautiful and Country

    Emmanuel V. September 2026
We spent a fantastic week in Georgia exposed to beautiful mountains and glaciers. The food was a big standout and was plentiful. Our guides were honestly the best part of our trip with a shout out to Levani our epic guide, Georgian history buff and even dancer! (And great driver, having to transfer us the long way back due to a road landslide) Can’t recommend trip enough. Just a heads up however that this is very much a “3 level” difficulty trip so make sure this is what u are looking for. We have done 4 and 5 level difficulty with MBA and this was accurate as a 3. Not overly challenging or long trek days, many times done by 3pm so nice and relaxing if looking for this. But worth every penny.
  • Amazing week in the mountains

    Gordon M. August 2026
Had a fantastic week with Leri and Paro, highlights not surprisingly was the scenery it was simply stunning. Really enjoyed the point to point route, the food was exceptional especially dinner at Leri’s guesthouse. Special mention to Paro for his excellent support crossing rivers and just being a great guy, helping everyone. I really enjoyed Georgia and look forward to returning soon, 🇬🇪.

  • Svaneti Shenanigans

    Aisling B. August 2026
I had the absolute best week trekking through Svaneti. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, I have never seen such a variety of wildflowers before in my life. Sandro and Levan were truly phenomenal guides, they not only kept us safe and motivated on the trails but educated us about Georgian culture, food, wine and music. Every night you get to try an absolute feast of Georgian cuisine (including wine and chacha if you do wish). The hikes are fairly easy, and out guides were brilliant at adapting the route to make them harder/easier depending on the needs of the group. I highly recommend that everyone goes to the "Disco" in Adishi, as it was one of the most bizarre but hilarious nights of my life. I genuinely have not had thay much fun or laughed that much in a while.
  • Had a brilliant time on

An incredible trip to Georgia! The scenery was fantastic, the walks were varied and the views were amazing! Views of the glacier were particularly impressive. Sandro and Levan worked very hard to ensure we were looked after and well fed (potato pie is worth a try)! Our group got on really well - a great week with great people! Highly recommend this trip!

FAQs

The terrain on the trail is mixed and ranges from easy jeep paths, forest paths and alpine meadows, to rough rock-strewn climbs as you get closer to the glaciers. Good trekking boots are recommended, well worn-in of course, as are trekking poles.

For 2025 and beyond the itinerary has been updated, based on customer feedback, to make the route require fewer road transfers and allow for more time hiking point-to-point, giving the route a better "flow". The local host believes these changes will enhance the experience even further, as Much Better Adventurers really enjoy hiking in the Svaneti region of Georgia. There are now just two short road transfers within the hiking itinerary once up in the mountains: On Day 3, after you hike to see the Ushba waterfalls, there is a short 15km transfer from the guesthouse in Becho to your accommodation in Mestia. On Day 7, in the morning there is a short 10km transfer by road from Iprali to the historic settlement of Ushguli.

There will be 4x4 vehicle support throughout, so you can leave your main luggage/rucksack in the vehicle and just carry a daypack while trekking.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with (opens in new tab). You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

The average temperature during summer in Georgia typically ranges from 25-35°C in the lower valleys. However, up on the plateaus and high in the mountains it will be colder, especially when exposed to the wind. For every 1000m of ascent, the temperature can be expected to drop by approximately 6.5°C. Mountain climates are notoriously unpredictable so it is essential to bring wet weather gear and layers to adjust your temperature as required. At night temperatures can drop down to 5°C. Dry sunny days are common (sunscreen/sun-protection is important) and rain at this time of year is rare but can happen.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 389kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
