Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

This trek has multiple long days with plenty of climbing up and down, so you should be in good shape and used to walking in the hills for consecutive days. Although not technically difficult, the hiking and topping a number of peaks is bound to make you puff so some strong walking legs will go a long way. The Sharr Mountains are pretty similar to most European mountain climates: cold and snowy in the winter and sunny and pleasant in the summer.

We recommend going on this trip between May and October when daytime temperatures in Pristina average between 21-27°C and days are usually in the region of 10-17°C in the mountains. It gets cool at night with the potential for temperatures to hover only a few degrees above freezing, so make sure you pack some warm clothing too.

Like any mountain environment, be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Although the summers are generally nice and warm, the rain can set in without a moment's notice, so do pack accordingly. A layering system is essential in the mountains.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a good-sized and comfortable backpack to carry personal items during each day of hiking. You'll have access to your main luggage on nights 4, 5 and 7. Between these nights (i.e. days 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7), you'll need to carry overnight belongings and your daily hiking kit, lunch and water.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke (opens in new tab). Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

I loved learning about Kosovo and experiencing a mountain landscape that felt relatively undiscovered - in the great company. We were hiking up through wild raspberries and blueberries, past shepherds and their dogs, to be rewarded by ridge views and dips into mountain lakes. The guesthouses were welcoming and comfortable with delicious food - a highlight. And much neededl, as my legs certainly got a good workout!

Amazing six days on the High Scardus Trail in the Shari mountains in July. Very diverse landscape, stunning views and almost no other hikers on the mountain except our own group. We had charming nights in local towns, mountains guest house and a night in a tent near a small river. The food is local dishes and very tasty. The guide was competent and gave a lot of historical insight to the region and the people living there. Thanks for six amazing days on mountain šŸ‘ŒšŸ¾šŸ˜Š

Wow! What an amazing week! From stunning views, to the most impressive wildflower meadows I've seen, to orchids lining stream beds, to many different varieties of butterflies, to mountain lakes to swim in, to wild blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, to guesthouses with warm welcomes, every day was different and equally amazing. I felt so lucky to be hiking in the Sharr mountains now, whilst it is so quiet. Many days we saw no other hikers, only a shepherd or a few blueberry pickers. The trails are often sheep tracks but Blendi our guide knew exactly where we were going. Blendi's love for the mountains and the work that Butterfly outdoor adventures (local host company run by Uta) are doing to develop mountaineers of the future and encouraging women in their country is truly fantastic. Blendi had a great sense of humour and was a fantastic guide from getting us going in the morning, to guiding knowledgeably on the trails, to card games in the evenings. I also learnt a lot about the history of Kosovo and ethnic Albanians. This is a truly amazing trip and I'd recommend it to anyone but you should be prepared for long days hiking and steep elevation.

Butterfly adventures were really quick to answer all my many questions before the trip. And Blendi was a fantastic guide. I had complete confidence in his leadership out on the trail, and he was just as great in the evenings—hanging out with us over cards. That said, it's not a late-night partying kind of trip. We would still hit the bunks early and wake up early ready to start hiking all over again. The hostels were super welcoming to our exhausted group. Every place was clean with delicious food and wonderfully friendly local hosts. These are the trails less trodden by humans. The sheep tracks on the edge of the mountains added just the right amount of adrenaline fueled adventure I was looking for. Now is the time to visit these mountains. We hardly passed anyone else on the trail, giving us stunning, tranquil views all to ourselves every single day.

Had a great time on this hike, with a great group. The views were stunning, with each day providing something new and beautiful. Mountains, meadows, lakes and waterfalls, plenty. We were led by a enthusiastic guide, who made a great impression on the trip. He drove us up the steep hills and motivated us through each day, providing motivation alongside great knowledge of local history. Overall a great trip & a hidden gem of a location.

From start to finish, this adventure did not disappoint! I chose this trail in the hopes of finding less crowds and more pristine, off-the-beaten-path, wild spaces - and wow did it deliver. Once on trail, the only other wanderers we came across were shepherds and their dogs (almost all of which were gentle and well mannered). Due to the low foot traffic, the trail was not always clearly trodden, so at least once a day there was some light bushwhacking and route-finding which kept things feeling remote and wild. While there is no technical or particularly dangerous elements, it is critical to be prepared for long, hard days, with lots of elevation ups and downs, over some challenging terrain. Be sure your gear, mind, and body are prepared! Each night we enjoyed a different type of lodging - everything from river-side camping to family guest houses to luxury hotels - to recharge and relax. It was great to experience such a variety, get opportunities to interact with the community, and be able to enjoy a cold beer at the end of a long day! The local company (Butterfly Outdoor Adventure) that operates the trip is owned and operated by an incredibly accomplished, world-renowned mountaineer, Uta Ibrahimi, who worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for our group. I cannot recommend this enough - it was truly a ā€œmuch better adventureā€!

  • Where Wild Mountains and Lifelong Memories Meet

    Christine T. July 2026
If someone had told me this would end up being one of the best trips I’ve ever taken, I probably would have smiled politely and assumed they were overselling it. They weren’t. I’ve traveled quite a bit and have done guided trips before, including another adventure with Much Better Adventures, but this one somehow managed to exceed every expectation. The hiking itself was extraordinary. Day after day it felt like we had an entire mountain range to ourselves. Instead of crowds, we shared the trails with grazing cows, wild goats balancing effortlessly on impossible cliffs, and local villagers who greeted us with genuine warmth everywhere we went. There were moments where we’d stop, look around, and realize there wasn’t another hiking group in sight—just endless mountains stretching in every direction. It’s becoming increasingly rare to find places that still feel truly wild, and Kosovo and North Macedonia absolutely delivered. A huge part of what made this trip so special was our guide, Uta. Knowing she summited all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks is impressive on paper, but spending a week with her is what really leaves the lasting impression. She never made the trip about her achievements. Instead, she quietly shared her experience whenever it could help us become better hikers or better understand the mountains we were walking through. She knew exactly when to encourage us, when to slow the pace, and when to gently push us beyond what we thought we were capable of. Throughout the trip I never questioned our safety for a second. She was calm, professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and genuinely kind. One thing I love about Much Better Adventures is that they consistently make complicated travel feel effortless. This was my second trip with them, and once again they absolutely nailed the logistics. Every transfer, every accommodation, every meal, every detail seemed to happen exactly when it should. If there were problems behind the scenes, we never knew about them because they were already solved before they reached us. That allows you to spend your energy enjoying the experience instead of worrying about it. The accommodations somehow matched the adventure perfectly. One night you’re wild camping beneath an incredible sky, and the next you’re soaking in a spa at a five-star hotel. It never felt random; it felt like the perfect balance between adventure and comfort. But what surprised me most was the people. I honestly joked by the end that Much Better Adventures must secretly interview everyone before accepting them, because I can’t explain how our group came together so naturally. Everyone clicked almost immediately. We came from different places and different backgrounds, yet every dinner was filled with laughter, stories, and conversations that somehow never ran out. By the end of the trip, saying goodbye felt surprisingly difficult. These weren’t just people I hiked with, they became friends I’ll genuinely stay in touch with. When I think back on this adventure, I don’t just remember the incredible landscapes. I remember laughing around the dinner table after long hiking days. I remember watching the sunrise over silent mountains. I remember the lessons Uta shared. I remember realizing how lucky we were to experience a part of Europe that still feels authentic, uncrowded, and wonderfully untouched. That’s what makes this trip so memorable. It’s not just a hiking holiday. It’s one of those rare experiences that reminds you why you travel in the first place. To Uta, the entire local team, and everyone at Much Better Adventures, thank you for creating something I’ll be talking about for years. I’ll absolutely be back.
  • More Than a Hike—A Life-Changing Adventure

    William July 2026
If you’re even thinking about booking this trek, stop debating and just do it. I just got back from hiking through the Sharr Mountains, and it was one of the most incredible travel experiences of my life. Much Better Adventures has once again exceeded every expectation. They have a way of creating trips that are so much more than a vacation—they’re experiences that challenge you, inspire you, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home. Our guide, Uta, was truly exceptional. She struck the perfect balance of encouraging us to push beyond what we thought we were capable of while always making sure everyone felt supported, safe, and included. Her knowledge, passion for the mountains, and genuine care for the group made this trip unforgettable. One of the biggest surprises was the people. We came from all over the world, but our shared love of adventure brought us together almost instantly. By the end of the trek, we weren’t just a group of strangers—we were a team, cheering each other on through every climb, swapping stories over dinner, laughing nonstop, and creating friendships and memories I’ll treasure forever. Every day felt like a new adventure. The landscapes were absolutely breathtaking, with endless ridgelines, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and panoramic views that rarely had another person in sight. It genuinely felt like we had an entire mountain range to ourselves. The accommodations were warm and welcoming, the local food was outstanding, and the hospitality everywhere we went made us feel at home. If you’re looking for a destination that feels untouched, offers spectacular hiking, immerses you in local culture, and connects you with an amazing group of like-minded travelers, this is the tour. It will push you physically, reward you with some of the most stunning scenery you’ll ever see, and leave you wondering why more people haven’t discovered this hidden gem. Without question, this was an adventure I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
  • Very good type 2 fun!

    Thomas E. July 2026
One of the hardest multi days I’ve done. Mostly because of the ā€œBalkan uphillā€ (essentially all ascent is direct and along the steepest line) and the relentless pace of our great leader. But the rewards are brilliant. Hiking in pristine environments, with very few other people. Really witnessing a true undeveloped corner of Europe. Very mixed bag accommodation. From stunning hotels and mountain lodges to some guest houses that require you to really lower expectations! But delicious food all round!
  • True wilderness + amazing people!

    Derek S. July 2026
This week-long trek kicked my butt, but in the best way! The views somehow got better and better as the days went on, our guide Uta was truly a mountaineering legend, and our group was a wonderful mix of people from all walks of life. Highly recommended!
  • A Hidden Gem in the Balkans

    Lene Z. July 2026
This trip to the Sharr Mountains was truly something special, and I couldn't recommend it more if you're looking for an off-the-beaten-track adventure. The mountains are incredibly beautiful, with trails winding through endless wildflower meadows and some of the most stunning views I've ever seen. Every day felt like walking through a postcard. Uta is simply the best guide you could hope for. With her impressive mountaineering experience and genuine love for her home mountains, she guided us with so much care, warmth, and passion. The guesthouses are simple, but that's part of the charm. The hospitality was so genuine, with wonderful home-cooked dinners shared around long tables outside, with great conversations and the mountains all around us. And, as always, the group was full of kind, adventurous, like-minded people. The combination of the incredible scenery, the wonderful company, and Uta's guidance made this a trip I'll never forget.
  • Uta was an inspirational guide

    ANDREW W. July 2026
Uta was an inspirational guide to the Sharr mountains. We had an excellent group and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
  • Magical Hiking Hopping Borders

    Grace W. July 2026
This hiking trip is a truly magical adventure. As you criss-cross between the borders of Kosovo and North Macedonia, you’ll rarely see another soul, meaning this untouched wilderness is all yours to drink in and explore. We had an amazing guide, Uta, who is an absolute mountaineering beast. She expertly guided us on trails that sometimes looked like they weren’t even there, taking us through fields of flowers, stream crossings, zigzags up peaks, and to hidden mountain lakes and waterfalls. She’s got some serious mountains under her belt, including Everest, so you know you’re in good hands. She also handled all the logistics so smoothly and with a smile, meaning our group of about 15 really never had to worry about anything. The scenery is just incredible in the Sharr Mountains, and every day brought us something new. I’d say the first day is probably the hardest because you’ll do a fair bit of hiking just straight up the mountain, but the rest of the climbs are a bit more gentle or involve zig zagging up. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll be tired at the end of the day, but we had a couple newbie multi-day hikers on the trip, and they were able to complete all the hikes (blisters and all). The accommodations were simple, clean, and comfortable, and honestly cooked us some amazing homestyle meals. I’m vegetarian, and I never went hungry on this trip. The hearty vegetarian stew at the historic Ljuboten Mountain Hut after the first day of hiking was one of our favorite dishes of the entire trip (including the meat eaters!). It also helped that after every day of hiking, wherever we stayed offered up cold beers for around 2 euros. We made some great memories playing cards at tables outside as the sun set and we polished off a Peja or Zlaten Dab. The Balkans truly feel like an undiscovered gem, but I have a feeling it won’t stay that way for long. So if you’re on the fence about the trip, I’d just go for it sooner rather than later. From the incredible friends I made to the stunning hiking we tackled, I’m seriously going to remember this trip for a long time!
  • Great trip with great people!

    Lars G. July 2026
Wonderful trip with wonderful people! Amazing trip, beautiful scenery and lots of laughter thanks to a great group. Uta is a fantastic guide who made this trip even better, everything was well organized. Beautiful and great accommodation - sometimes rather basic but always clean, with great food, and at fantastic spots!
  • Hidden gem

    Hilary S. July 2026
A truly stunning part of the world with very few people in it! Walks were varied and accommodation too, giving a real insight into Albanian villages.
  • Perfect!

    Daryn A. July 2026
I had an amazing time on this trip. The hiking and routes were brilliant and stunning every day. The food was great & the accommodation each night was always very clean and comfortable. Uta was the perfect guide with bags of knowledge & a great sense of humour. We had a great team spirit in a group of like minded people.
  • Wonderful week in the Sharr Mountains

    Annette P. July 2026
We had a great time in a beautiful landscape. Thanks to our incredible and wonderful guide Uta.
  • Incredible Scenery

    Dominic L. June 2026
Had raised eyebrows from friends and family before this trip. ā€œWhy Kosovo?ā€ But my instincts were right! If you are looking for a trip with breathtaking mountainous views, wild flower meadows, and forests with waterfalls, then this trip will not disappoint. I had to pinch myself on the views being offered on our hikes. Some of the days are hard and long, but all offer a rewarding backdrop of steep rocky faces, mountain tops, and forests, intertwined with working life in the Balkans - in fact we met more cows and sheepdogs than other hikers. It was peaceful and uninterrupted . The villages are all hospitable. At the end of a hike, locals come forward to ask where you are from and are curious to know your thoughts on their country. My answer to them was always: ā€œincredible, beautiful. ā€ The border hopping into North Macedonia and back into Kosovo also added to the excitement and achievement. The food was generally excellent . The accommodation on some nights was basic, with limited facilities, but in a way that added to the charm. Lucky to also have a group who was so relaxed — all solo travellers, up for fun, adventure, and sharing experiences. Highly recommend.
  • Exceeded Expectations

    Katie N. June 2026

Great tour with great people, loved every moment of it!
  • Autumn adventures with a twist!

    Kate E. October 2025
Although the weather significantly changed the state of play (autumn hiking to winter hiking), our travels, adventures and experiences were not compromised a a consequence. In fact our guide Uta made the trip even more memorable and meaningful. We were guided through the conditions expertly to ensure not only did we see and climb as much as we should have, we also got some winter skills training and the opportunity to experience a whole new realm of mountain activity. Thanks to Uta and welcoming Kosovan and North Macedonian hospitality we had a five star experience and came away much richer in knowledge both about the mountains and the countries. Highly recommend! Definitely planning a visit again.
  • GREAT TRIP!!!

    Jakub K. October 2025
What a trip! We were all expecting warm weather, but instead, we got snow – definitely not what we packed for! ā„ļøšŸ˜… Because of that, the original programme had to change a bit, but honestly, it turned out even better than expected. Big shoutout to our guide Uta, who was absolutely amazing! She quickly reorganised everything so we could still go trekking despite the surprise weather. The new plan worked out perfectly – we still got to experience the beauty of the area, just with a wintery twist! The food throughout the trip was so good – every meal was a treat. And the group? Just awesome. Great vibes, lots of laughs, and an all-around fun crew to travel with. Despite the unexpected snow, it was a fantastic trip. Would definitely recommend it – just maybe pack for all seasons, just in case! šŸ˜‰
  • Hiking in Kosovo and North Macedonia

    Ian L. October 2025
This was a great trip, we had very early snowfall for October which changed the schedule for the week and made the hiking slightly harder. Our guide Uta was exceptional, and worked so hard for us, having to change most of the accommodation and planned hikes for the entire week as well as sorting out extra transport. But she still took us on some incredible hikes! She is an incredible person. The food in the huts, hostels and hotels was plentiful and very nice.
  • I loved it!

    Hannah J. October 2025
Just loved it. I adored the wildcard weather event which flipped the itinerary on its head. Uta handled it with ease and grace and it turned out to be a brilliant trip. Winter hiking was so fun and added an extra special touch to this adventure. Thank you Uta for keeping it incredible despite some very obvious challenges.
  • Unforgettable experience

    Joanna K. October 2025
Everything about that trip was absolutely incredible. What was meant to be an autumn hike unexpectedly turned into a snowy adventure — and it couldn’t have been more magical! ā„ļø Uta was phenomenal; her vast experience shone through every step of the way, and I felt completely safe with her guidance. The Sharr Mountains did not disappoint, and the food was honestly the best I’ve ever had on a trip. I’m giving Uta and MBA a solid āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø for this unforgettable experience!

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 220.86kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
