Touch down in Pula, the largest city on the Istrian Peninsula. Meet your host and group and drive for an hour into Istria's fertile interior, reaching the charming hilltop town of Motovun. You'll have time to stroll the cobbled streets and the town's medieval walls, enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding countryside – home to some of Croatia's best-known vineyards and olive groves. Get to know your guide over a meal at a local restaurant and tuck into your first taste of Croatian cuisine. Over the coming days, you'll undertake a farm-to-fork adventure as you hike scenic trails through the spots where the food is cultivated, and indulge in authentic tastings and meals at family-run eateries nestled in the heart of the countryside.

Today starts with a quick drive to the medieval hillfort of Zavrsje – complete with a 15th-century church, a castle, and 22m-high leaning tower that looks out over the age-old vista. From here, you'll walk on old wine trails through rolling green countryside. Upon reaching the small village of Livade you'll stop at a family-run winery to learn about the production of one of Istria's most famous exports. Along with tasting four different varieties of wine, you'll also enjoy a light lunch of local cheese, prosciutto, olive oils and fresh vegetables. You'll have a chance to walk off the food on the final five kilometres back to Motovun. Tonight, your guide can recommend one of Motovun's many authentic Istrian restaurants to continue your foodie adventure.
Day 3
Head up high for a memorable mountain picnic

A short drive takes you to the village of Dane, near Buzet, this morning. On the way you'll stop off at a shop where your guide will help you choose the best local produce to make up today's mountain picnic. Cheese, olives, dried meats, bread and fresh fruit will likely feature strongly. From Dane, you'll climb steadily up to a wide ridge before taking in the three peaks of Špićasti Vrh, Muzari and Žbevnica. Along the ridge, your guide will lay out the blankets where you can enjoy your picnic with a view. Afterwards, drop down quickly to the valley and the small hamlet of Brest, where you'll be picked up and returned to Motovun.
Day 4
Waterfall trails and lunch in the 'smallest town in the world'
Hiking3-4 hrs · 12km · 430m up · 140m downBoutique HotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Today's hike starts on the outskirts of Buzet, where you'll take on the first section of the well-known '7 waterfalls' trail. A short scrambling section, protected by chains, leads you to a scenic view above the town before continuing along the picturesque River Mirna. Gentle rolling terrain carries you down the river, taking in a series of pretty waterfalls and small trail-side pilgrimage shrines. Leaving the river behind, a short climb leads you to the fairytale hamlet of Hum, known as the smallest town in the world, where you can take a rest in a local tavern. Humska Konoba was opened in 1976 and serves rustic food typical of the surrounding countryside, the perfect place to refuel after this morning's walk. You'll enjoy a late lunch of traditional Istrian dishes, such as corn and bean stew (bobici) and pasta with slow-cooked beef (fuzi). In the afternoon, there's time to visit the town's museum and distillery, which offers free brandy tasting or an optional guided tour (€10 fee, payable locally) where you can learn about the production of rakija, a strong liquor popular across Croatia. After your afternoon in Hum, head back to the hotel for your final evening in Motovun.
Day 5
Hike up an appetite for a truffle lunch, wine and olive oil tasting

Lace up your boots for a last walk through the Istrian interior, before heading to the coast. Starting directly from your hotel, head west and descend from Motovun into the fields and vineyards below. An easy and pleasant stroll takes you past the village of Brkac and over the River Krvar before a short climb up to Špinovci Tikel, a family-owned agrotourismo in the verdant countryside. The restaurant here is run by two brothers, one a chef and the other a winemaker, and uses produce sourced from the surrounding landscape. Here, you will enjoy a special lunch of truffles, pasta, stews, and the family's homemade prosciutto ham, all while soaking in the spectacular organic setting, with Motovun still visible on its hilltop perch in the distance. After the feast, a light walk takes you on to the pretty hillside village of Vizinada, with imposing views that have inspired many painters and writers. Hop into the van for a quick drive south to Vodnjan where you'll delve into a wine and olive oil tasting at the Medea Winery, learning more about two of Istria's main exports. After an epic day of hiking and gastronomy, there will be a short drive back to the Istrian capital of Pula, where you'll spend your final two nights of the trip.

This morning, embark on an adventure to the southern tip of Istria, starting in the charming town of Premantura. From here you'll hit the coastal trail leading to the rugged, untamed Kamenjak Peninsula – renowned for its dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and secluded coves. You'll hike to Cape Grakalovak, where 150-million-year-old fossilised dinosaur footprints are etched into the limestone. Following the coastline, you’ll arrive at the quirky Safari Bar and stop for a light lunch: a perfect spot to recharge before exploring the nearby Velika Kolumbarica Bay, a hotspot for daring cliff divers plunging into the crystal-clear sea. From the coast, venture inland, weaving through bushland and meadows alive with native orchids. Your hike ends at Portić Bay, where you can cool off with a refreshing Adriatic swim before returning to Pula. End your foodie adventure on a high with a farewell meal at one of Pula's most renowned seafood restaurants on the marina. You'll share seafood platters showcasing the best local specialities, including gregada (a Croatian fish and potato stew), and enjoy your final taste of Istria into the night.

Before You Travel
What to Pack

Know before you go! Some stuff we'll provide, other things you'll need to bring.
FAQs
What if things don't go to plan?
In the unlikely event of weather disrupting the planned hikes, your guides will suggest suitable alternatives in the region.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
You'll be led by one experienced local guide, and a driver who will drop you off at the start and pick you up at the end of the day hikes.
Can I leave my excess luggage somewhere?
Any luggage you don't need on the hikes can be left in the hotel or the host's vehicle.
What do I do about drinking water?
The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains and restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
Hot climate: what factors should I consider?
This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.
Before travelling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website, where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).
For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.

What's the weather like?
The Istrian Peninsula, located on the north of Croatia's Adriatic coastline, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild, dry winters and hot summer temperatures. In May and early June you can expect temperatures ranging from 15 to 22°C and occasional rain showers that keep the countryside lush and vibrant, ideal conditions for hiking before the summer heat. As summer unfolds later in June, the days become warmer and longer, with temperatures climbing to 28°C and drier conditions setting in. July and August bring the height of summer, offering hot, sunny weather with highs of 25 to 32°C. By September, the heat softens, giving way to pleasant early autumn conditions, with temperatures between 18 and 26°C. While the occasional rain shower may appear, the overall climate remains mild and enjoyable, making this period a fantastic time to explore Istria's highlights on foot.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 85kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
