Itinerary

    Day 1

Arrive in Cusco and get to know your crew

    Dinner included
    Show Day 1 detail

Welcome to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, nestled high in the Andes at 3350m above sea level. Arrive into the airport where a transfer will be waiting to take you to your hotel, conveniently located near one of the city’s vibrant and historic main squares. To ease into the altitude, we recommend taking it slow this afternoon – hydration and rest are essential for acclimatisation. Settle into your hotel, and if you’re feeling up for it, take a leisurely stroll through Cusco’s picturesque streets for your first taste of Peruvian culture. In the evening, meet your guide for a welcome briefing, where you’ll learn more about the adventure ahead. Afterward, enjoy a delicious dinner at a nearby restaurant, sampling authentic Peruvian cuisine and getting to know your fellow adventurers. If your travel plans allow, you may want to consider arriving a day or two early to adjust to the altitude and recover from any jet lag – it’s a great way to start your adventure feeling refreshed.

    Day 2

Explore the ancient ruins of the Sacred Valley

    Hotel
    Twin share
    Breakfast and lunch included
    Show Day 2 detail

The Sacred Valley was a vital region for the Inca Empire, serving as an agricultural, spiritual, and political centre. Today, you’ll visit two of the most significant sites, Ollantaytambo and Pisac, where you can explore ancient Inca ruins, marvel at intricate terraces, and stroll along cobbled streets that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Each site offers a deep dive into Inca history and culture, from Pisac’s impressive archaeological complex to Ollantaytambo’s massive fortress and temple. After a day of exploration, return to your hotel in Cusco, where you’ll meet your guide for a quick pre-trek briefing. This is the perfect opportunity to ask any last-minute questions and ensure you’re fully prepared for the trek beginning tomorrow. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy – perhaps take some time to unwind, grab a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, and likely get an early night ahead of an unforgettable adventure through the heart of the Andes.

    Day 3

    Trek to Humantay Lake (4200m)

    All meals included
    Show Day 3 detail

Prepare for a very early start this morning, with a pickup at 05:00 to begin your adventure. Embark on a scenic drive with a brief stop in Mollepata, where you can enjoy an optional second breakfast before continuing to Challacancha, the start point of the Salkantay route (opens in new tab). After packing the horses, it’s time to set off towards Soraypampa (3900m), the location of your first campsite. The trail is mostly undulating, passing through a glacier-carved valley and following an ancient Inca water channel still used by local farmers. The breathtaking scenery sets the tone for the journey ahead. Arriving at Soraypampa, settle into camp and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. After some rest, you'll hike to the stunning Humantay Lake (4200m). While the distance isn’t long, the high altitude and rugged steep terrain will call for a slow, steady pace. At the lake, take time to soak in the beauty of its turquoise waters backed by the towering Humantay glacier – a truly magical sight. Once you’ve enjoyed the views, return to camp where a hearty dinner, a beautiful sunset, and a peaceful night’s sleep await.

    Day 4

Soraypampa to Huayracmachay, via the Salkantay Pass (4630m)

    Campsite
    Twin share
    All meals included
    Show Day 4 detail

Wake at dawn, sip on a revitalising cup of coca tea and fuel up with a hearty breakfast in preparation for the trip's most challenging day. This morning, you'll reach the highest point of the trail: the mighty Salkantay Pass (4630m), which is a steep and challenging climb along a rugged, winding route. Reaching the pass is an incredible accomplishment, offering awe-inspiring panoramic views of the surrounding valleys with the imposing Salkantay Mountain (6271m) standing proudly before you. At the top, you’ll learn about the sacred significance of Apu Salkantay in Inca culture and take part in a traditional offering ceremony, to connect with the mountain’s spiritual energy. After taking in the breathtaking scenery, you’ll begin a steep descent to the next campsite at Huayracmachay (3850m).

Please note that depending on the group’s pace, acclimatisation, and weather conditions, your guide may recommend extending the hike and descending further to Collpapampa (2950m). This adds an additional 9km and 3-4 hours to the day's trek. While this option makes for a much longer and more challenging hike, it does ensure a shorter and more relaxed day tomorrow, plus a better night's sleep due to the lower altitude.

    Day 5

Descend into the cloud forest and on to Lucmabamba (2000m)

    Campsite
    Twin share
    All meals included
    Show Day 5 detail

Today, you'll witness how the scenery changes rapidly and drastically from the Andes to the Peruvian cloud forest as you descend along the Santa Teresa River, trekking past lush vegetation, avocado and banana plantations, and waterfalls. Stop for lunch at Colpapampa before continuing on to Lucmabamba, where a campsite will be set in the grounds of a local farmer's house. After arriving, you'll have a chance to visit his coffee plantation, learn about regional coffee production and, of course, get a taste of the freshest local brew. Time permitting, you may decide to travel to the nearby hot springs of Santa Teresa (optional, payable locally) – a great way to soothe your tired muscles after the last couple challenging days.

Please note that if your guide decided to extend yesterday's hike to Colpapampa, today's hiking distance and duration will be approximately half of that stated above.

  1. Day 6

Trek to Aguas Calientes via Llactapata

    Hotel
    Twin share
    Breakfast and lunch included
    Show Day 6 detail

Begin with a good breakfast to fuel up for your final day of trekking. This morning, you’ll hike a section of the famous Inca Trail as you tackle a steady two-hour uphill climb with great views of the Santa Teresa Valley, reaching Llactapata (2700m), a fascinating Inca archaeological site situated right across from Machu Picchu. Your guide will share insights about the ancient cultural significance of the site, and with luck you may get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu from a distance – this is a perfect spot from which to take some amazing photos, building up the anticipation for tomorrow’s visit. Next, continue to descend and grab quick lunch in a local restaurant, before reaching Hidroeléctrica, where a 250m artificial waterfall provides electricity to the city of Cusco. Here, you'll board the train to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll check into a comfortable hotel and perhaps indulge in a power nap. If you have the energy, you may opt to head out and visit a local restaurant for dinner.

    Day 7

    Ah... Machu Picchu!

    Hotel
    Twin share
    Breakfast and dinner included
    Show Day 7 detail

Today, you’ll finally visit the culmination of your trek: Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Prepare for an early start to avoid the crowds, allowing you to experience the site’s beauty in the morning light. Once at the Inca citadel, you’ll enjoy a guided two-hour tour, exploring the most significant areas of this ancient marvel. You’ll discover houses, temples, terraces, crop fields, and more. The ingenuity of the Inca civilisation will leave you in awe, particularly their advanced engineering, which remains a mystery in many ways. After your visit, head back to Aguas Calientes for lunch, then continue your journey back to Cusco aboard the expedition train to Ollantaytambo. From there, a private vehicle will take you back to your hotel. After checking in and freshening up, head out for a group farewell dinner where you can toast to the incredible adventure you've shared.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

Your host will arrange to pick you up on your arrival and drop you off in time for your departing flight (but please note that if you arrive early in the morning, your room may not be ready for check-in, as the standard check-in time is 13:00). A welcome briefing is typically held at 18:00 on Day 1, so we recommend arriving in the afternoon to ensure you don’t miss this important session. Your airport transfer is included even if you arrive before Day 1 of the trip – just share your flight details with your host in advance.

Travel options

There are currently no direct international flights from Europe or the US into Cuzco. Flights generally involve one or two changes and go via Lima. If you prefer to break up the journey, you could consider flying into Lima a day early and booking an onward flight to Cuzco the following day. Airport hotels are available in Lima or, if you have more time to spare, why not stay in the popular Miraflores district of Lima and use this as a base to explore the city? See Optional Extras below for prices for extra nights in Cuzco or Lima before or after the tour.

Trip level explained

Level 5

Challenging

A notch tougher and higher than the classic Inca Trail (but without the hassle of permits), the Salkantay Trek is a demanding yet rewarding challenge for those with good fitness who are seeking quieter trails and breathtaking Andean landscapes. Your two nights in Cusco (3350m) before the trek serve as acclimatisation days, but the steep terrain and high altitude will still test your endurance, especially during the first three days of the trek. A good level of fitness is essential and if your schedule allows, we strongly recommend adding one or two extra nights before the trip begins to further acclimatise and shake off any jet lag. While no prior trekking experience is required, you’ll need the stamina to handle up to 10 hours of hiking daily, tackling significant ascents and descents over four consecutive days.

What if i need to skip an activity?

As this is a linear trek, it is not possible to skip individual days. However, if there are any issues before or in the early stages of the trek your host may be able to arrange private transport and alternative accommodation (at an additional cost) to allow you to rejoin the trip after the trekking stage.

What will I need to carry?

Porterage is included, so you’ll only need to carry a small daypack with essentials.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 4500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The likelihood of more severe conditions, such as HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) and HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema), increases at higher altitudes. Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Highly Remote Environments: Factors to consider

This trip travels through very remote areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited and evacuation may take a significant amount of time. In some locations, medical facilities may provide only basic treatment, and further travel may be required to reach a hospital capable of providing more advanced care.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, evacuation may involve multiple stages and different forms of transport before reaching appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may be unreliable for significant portions of this trip and communication may rely on satellite devices carried by your guides.

Your guides are trained and experienced in operating in remote environments and will manage the group carefully throughout the journey. However, due to the remoteness of these locations, access to external support may be limited and delays to medical care should be expected.

Before booking, consider your personal health and comfort travelling in locations where medical care and evacuation options may be limited or delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling. If you have a medical condition that may require rapid access to specialist care, regular monitoring, or emergency treatment, this type of remote travel may not be suitable without careful planning and medical advice.

Your travel insurance must cover the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation.

Fantastic trek! Our guides were brilliant and the whole team were slick in the way they got all of us, the equipment and food up and over the pass to Machu Picchu. Everything was incredibly well organised, the variety and quantity of food was great and there was that attention to detail and safety that you get with MBA trips. For example setting off on our first day was timed so that we got to Humantay lake as all the day trekkers were leaving so that we had it nearly to ourselves or pausing on the walk and providing a wealth of information on the flora and fauna to ensure that we were the last group through a narrow section of path to make things safer or avoid bottlenecks. On some websites they describe the Salkantay Trek as quieter compared to the Inca Trail...I was therefore expecting to see very few people but there were some sections where we would be in a neverending line of people all doing the trek. It was though stunning scenery and a great experience.

I cannot recommend the trip enough. Incredible views, amazing hiking, unreal food, it really couldn’t be better. Our guides Lino & Juan-Carlos were excellent and quite the comedic duo, they made the trip and the whole group bonded very well as a result.

Where to even begin. What a trip. What a group. Cristian and Eddie, the leaders, were absolutely fantastic. And the group we shared the experience with were all absolutely amazing. Best experience of my life so far I’d say.

Adventure of a lifetime with a lot of really great people. It was a bit cold in the mountains at altitude (no surprise there!) and it was a hot and humid in the jungle (again no surprise)…take what’s on the supplied recommended list and you’ll be well prepared for the adventure! The scenery is absolutely stunning. The walk is at a good pace and guides keep everyone together. The campsites are all really good fun; dinners and lunches excellent (cater for vegetarians and dietary restrictions- I have no idea how). Beers are available at each site for a small price if you want them - there’s a surprisingly frequent number of shops (traders) selling water, juice, local fruits etc. all along the root so don’t worry about running out of anything. The guides were brilliant - Toni, a guide of many years and knew everyone along the way. JC, new to the role and will be a great guide in his own right - great fun to walk with… Company were really easy to book with - no silly questions. Wi pick up future adventures with MBA for sure!!

This tour was fantastic. Our guides Tony and Juan Carlos did a fantastic job looking out for our needs, keeping us safe, well fed and entertained. The trek itself is challenging and proper altitude adjustment prior to tour commencement cannot be understated. There are two days in particular that are quite hard, but the guides cater to different paces well. Despite the challenges, the views were unparalleled and definitely achievable for most people of reasonable fitness. If unsure if you can do it, train properly before hand. The team of horsemen and chefs that were part of the support team were phenomenal. Some of the best food I’ve ever had, particularly that mango ceviche and Huancaina chicken. We were very lucky with the weather with stunning views of Machu Picchu, Lake Humantay and at Salkantay Pass. Be prepared to go without showers for a few days, but eat well, make great friends and have a laugh along the way

As a longtime solo walker, I took a chance on MBA’s September 12th tour based on their high reviews - and it was easily one of the best treks I’ve ever done. Everything was flawlessly organized, from the delicious, freshly cooked meals to the all-inclusive hassle-free logistics. Our two guides brought incredible energy and local expertise, leading us through breathtaking views every step of the way. This trip sparked a genuine love for South America, and I can't wait to return. Thank you, MBA, for a truly fabulous experience!

I had an amazing time hiking the Salkantay trail with Christian and John Carlos as our trail guides! Christians knowledge of all the Inca sites, flora & fauna, and Peru as a whole is outstanding and was an invaluable addition to the tour experience. The recognition of the different hiking abilities and ability to adapt to and cater to individual needs by Christian and John Carlos was brilliant, and ensured that everyone could safely challenge themselves as much as they wanted to on the hike. The cooking team and the porters were also excellent, the food was unreal and the tents and transported bags where handled with care and kept dry. The Machu Picchu tour was a once in a lifetime experience only made possible by Christians extensive and detailed knowledge. I also want to highlight how Christian got our group access to the Observatory carriage on the PeruRail trip back to Ollantaytambo, which is not included with this itinerary.

A really great trip, I was lucky to be part of such a great group! The Salkantay is not to be missed Even after a small accident that meant I couldn’t hike one of the days, Lino & JC handled the situation really professionally.

This is my second trip with MBA and they have totally changed my mind about group tours. This trip was fantastic from start to finish, from the guide, to the itinerary, group dynamic, food and scenery it was an unbelievable experience. It was my first time hiking at altitude but the itinerary catered for acclimatisation and the Peruvian Andes was just breathtaking. I would highly recommend this trip and cannot wait to book the next one.

  • Unfortunately, we had pouring rain

    Elizabeth D. August 2026
Unfortunately, we had pouring rain the first day of the trek and pouring rain and snow the second day of the trek. I understand that the local guides are not able to do anything about the weather, but there was a lack of communication on the trail as to lunch plans when our group got split up and we waited without knowing if we were going to eat lunch or not for over an hour. Our group used the itinerary from the website more often than relying on day-to-day information from our guide. In addition, I booked additional accommodation pre-trip in Cusco. There was an issue with the hotel room but I was not informed until my arrival at the initial hotel that I was booked to another hotel for the evening. However, Everything was worth it to see Machu Picchu! Generally, I think this would have been a better experience with better weather and better communication from the guide. I do think this was a reflection on the local team and not Much Better Adventures.

What an incredible trip. I was nervous traveling with a group of strangers, but everyone was so friendly and supportive, including and especially when the trek got tough. Our guides, Christian and Edsun, were incredible and made sure we learned about the land and people around us at every opportunity. I have no idea how our camp crew baked a whole cake in the middle of the jungle, but they made sure we were very well-fed. I was never hungry, despite being vegetarian and not being able to eat everything. The trek itself was very hard—the downhill sections are the worst parts, and days 3 and 4 were a lot hotter than I'd expected—but I am so glad I did it. You need trekking poles, so make sure to rent them if you can't bring your own. Peru is a beautiful country; huge thanks to Christian and Edsun for showing it to us so thoughtfully!
  • Life Changing Experience

Christian was an incredible guide throughout Peru! The Salkantay Trek is a life changing experience, but for the sake of the group and guides, please train before you make this journey :)

Loved it. Great time. Acclimatization push was a bit more aggressive than I’d do solo but guide did great checking on everyone.
  • Much more than just a trek!

    Chris W. July 2026
I signed up for this adventure looking for a challenging mountain trek and finished it with a deeper appreciation for Incan and Peruvian culture, plus some new friendships. This was my first true solo travel experience, and everyone in the Much Better Adventures group was welcoming and friendly, with diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Our guides, Christian and Edson, went above and beyond — they let us trek at our own pace while bringing the group together to teach us about indigenous culture, flora, and fauna. The meals were incredible, striking just the right balance of comfort amid the challenge. Sharing this experience with 13 strangers, now friends, was life-changing.

    Renee K. July 2026
This is a life-changing experience for many of us seeking change and challenge outside of our daily routines. Guides were exceptionally skilled, kind, empathic, and funny. We really got a feel for local and indigenous culture with them. I am very grateful for the week spent here.
  • Rewarding Adventure

    Susan J. July 2026
This was a very challenging trek but overall an amazing and very rewarding adventure. Thanks to our excellent guide and leader Christian and the support from Edson and the rest of the team. They did everything they could to make it an interesting and enjoyable experience for all. I would certainly recommend it if you are a strong hiker and well prepared for some tough and long hiking days.
  • Immerse yourself in the mountains, the Inca and beautiful Peru!

    Allison L. July 2026
A challenging but rewarding trek it feels like an achievement to have successfully completed it. Visiting Machu Picchu was incredible and our guide Christian really brought the place to life with his knowledge of Inca history and current research. I will never forget the beauty of the sheer sided jungle covered mountains around Machu Picchu. For those who struggled at high altitude horses were available to take them over the Salkantay pass - which is good to know if you feel unsure of your abilities. Hot showers and towels were available at most camp sites.

  • Unforgettable!!

    Melissa T. July 2026
Booking the Salkantay trek through Much Better Adventures was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I completed this trek in June and we were so lucky to have perfect weather conditions every single day – clear, blue skies, and stunning views in every direction. What made this trip truly unforgettable, though was our phenomenal guide Lino. His deep knowledge of Inca culture brought every landscape to life with his stories. The trek was physically challenging, but Lino‘s constant encouragement, safety-first approach and infectious energy kept the whole group motivated. And seeing him literally run up the Inca steps was simply amazing! I learned so much, felt incredibly well-taken care of, and came away with memories to last a lifetime. Much Better Adventures made the experience seamless (thank you Roxner) and their support of local businesses and farmers makes this life-changing trek even more special…and when you have a guide like the amazing Lino-well there’s not much else you could wish for!
  • Amazing Experience!

    Skye L. June 2026
I had an absolutely brilliant experience on the Salkantay Trek. The whole trip was exceptionally well organised from start to finish, striking a great balance between challenge, support and unforgettable scenery. A huge part of what made this trip so special were our guides, Lino and Eddy. Their knowledge of the mountains, Inca history and local culture really enriched the trek, and their calm, encouraging approach at altitude made a demanding hike feel completely manageable. They looked after everyone superbly and were an absolute credit to the company. One small note for future travellers: the optional hot springs trip is a long, hot and bumpy drive and very busy once you arrive. Some may enjoy it, but for me it was the only part of the itinerary I’d have happily skipped - worth knowing in advance so you can decide what suits you best. Overall, an outstanding adventure with seamless logistics, stunning landscapes and excellent guiding. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this trip - especially if you’re lucky enough to have Lino and Eddy leading the way! :)
  • Great trip

    Simon C. June 2026
This was a really great trip - stunning scenery, well organised, with fantastic guides. At 56, I was worried I may not be fit enough and it would be too cold. I don't run or cycle, but I'm comfortable walking 12 miles for a few consecutive days. And that was fit enough. The altitude makes it tough, but don't be put off - it's not everest. And the sleeping bag and some thermals kept me nicely warm. The route is popular but that's fine. There's plenty of space and scenery for everyone. Machu Pichu is the prize at the end - and is magnificent. But what makes this trip special is the added joy and experience of the journey to get there.
  • Perfect trip with great people

    Stefan June 2026
Well what can I say. Lino, Angelo and the team were amazing on our trek on the Salkantey trail to Machu Picchu. We were looked after every step of the way. The cooking was perfect and every meal was a delight with more than enough to go around. The transportation of our kit was faultless. The only thing we needed to concentrate on was doing the hike. With Lino and Angelo as guides we were in safe hands, making the whole trip stress free. Thank you so much for what you all do in making this an unforgettable experience 🙏🙏.
  • Special and meaningful adventure

    Elizabeth W. June 2026
The combination of stunning natural beauty, culture, personal challenge, and group dynamics made this a very special trip. Our guides Christian and Edson were so knowledgable and generous in sharing their heritage. Because of the elevation, parts of this trek are difficult - I would advise anyone considering it to take seriously the impact of elevation and consider arriving even earlier than recommended and/or taking altitude meds (I did and don't think I would have been able to complete the trek without them). But the challenges were so worthwhile and were necessary to truly experience these places on foot! Organization of the trip was good - timing was often flexible but we got where we needed to be in the end! The camping setup was taken care of for us and was comfortable. The food was always good and plentiful and as the only vegetarian in the group I was always taken care of. Our group genuinely enjoyed each others company. Seeing Machu Picchu was more meaningful to me after being immersed in the landscape and culture during the trek days. This is exactly the kind of adventure that I couldn't have on my own and I'm grateful that MBA made it possible.

Wow. What a fantastic trip. Very well organized and reasonably priced. Our guides Christian and Edison were amazing, paced the group very well. Some days we moved slower to avoid the crowds which I appreciated. Our group got along really well. Felt very lucky to share such a beautiful experience with amazing people :)

FAQs

The Inca Trail has all the fame, but in our humble opinion, this is a better, less crowded trek (opens in new tab). It passes through more dramatic landscapes, past Inca ruins, and still ends at Machu Picchu. It is widely regarded as the best alternative trek, and though that does mean you won’t have the trail to yourself, our local guides will keep you away from the crowds and camping away from other groups. You'll also evade the permit requirement and strict regulations that are enforced on the Inca Trail.

No, you don’t need a permit for the trek itself, but a permit is required to visit Machu Picchu—this is included in the trip price. Your host in Peru usually secures early entry permits (around 06:00 or 07:00) to help you avoid the crowds, with each permit pre-purchased in your name. For late bookings, permits may only be available for a later time slot, meaning you could enter separately from the group. To increase your chances of securing a permit with the group, we strongly recommend booking early and providing your host with your full name, passport number, nationality, and date of birth as soon as possible and preferably at the time of booking.

Yes, it is possible to leave excess luggage items at your hotel in Cusco and pick them up at the end of the trip.

Clean drinking water will be provided for you each morning and at meals. In an effort to eliminate plastic waste you must bring your own water bottle or hydration bladder with you. If you are concerned about the water quality, please feel free to bring additional water purification tablets.

Yes, horses are used by the local team to assist with the logistics of transporting food and camping equipment. They are cared for on the trail by trained handlers within the porterage team. Your host in Peru has the accreditation to work with horses, and they take steps to ensure the welfare of horses by applying a maximum weight of 30kg per horse on a maximum of two trekking expeditions per month. Please be aware that you may encounter other local trekking companies whilst on the trail who sadly do not take the same stringent approach to animal welfare.

This trip reaches elevations above 4500m, where the risks associated with Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab) (AMS) are higher, and where more serious conditions like HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) and HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) can occur.

Previous high-altitude experience doesn’t guarantee the same reaction every time, but it can be a helpful indicator. It gives you insight into how your body might respond, helps you recognise symptoms early, and prepares you mentally and physically for the demands of high-altitude trekking.

Your guide is trained to manage altitude risk by carefully managing the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and taking action if anyone becomes unwell.

Before travelling, think about your own physical condition and consult a medical professional if you have concerns – especially if you have underlying health issues. If possible, arriving a day or two early at altitude is a great way to help your body adjust.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

In the Andes, there are two main seasons: wet and dry. The dry season, which runs from May to September, is the best time to visit. This period generally offers higher chances of clear skies and breathtaking views of the Andean mountains. With minimal rainfall, trails are safer and less slippery; while cooler, more stable temperatures make trekking conditions ideal. However, this is also peak tourist season, meaning popular destinations like Machu Picchu and Cusco can be busier. Nights in the mountains can be quite cold, with temperatures often dipping below freezing. October, a shoulder month, is another great option. It sees fewer crowds than the peak dry season but generally maintains dry conditions, though occasional rain showers and cloud cover can occur. Regardless of the season, the unpredictable mountain weather at high altitudes can bring a mix of sunshine and rain, so being prepared for variable conditions is essential.

If you decide to visit Lima before or after your trek, remember that the season is the reverse of this, so you can expect some grey skies there.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 126kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
