Fly into the colourful city of Marrakech and head to your traditional riad in the historic medina. Spend the rest of the day exploring the souks and the iconic main square, Jemaa el-Fnaa – a place that’s been beguiling travellers for centuries. By day, throw yourself into the hustle of market traders and the typical orange juice vendors who inhabit the famous plaza, or retreat to one of the many rooftop bars overlooking the square to people watch over a glass tea or a tasty tagine. Nighttime is the busiest time in the square, with exotic smells flowing from the tempting food stalls and the ambient sounds of street performers, magicians and traditional dancers entertaining the gathered crowds. After sampling the atmosphere, return to the calm of your riad to prepare for the mountain adventure ahead.

After lunch in the middle of a juniper forest, continue to the Tamsoult Refuge (2250m) where you’ll spend the night beneath a vast, starry mountain sky.

Trip level explained

Level 5

Challenging

Full days of scenic hiking, loose footing, high altitude - you'll need a fairly good level of fitness for this one. The views make the effort more than worthwhile!

Allowing two extra days on the mountain (compared to our classic 3–night trip) gives more time for acclimatisation to the altitude, as well as breaking up the long summit day and descent. The final day of trekking involves just a short couple of hours down to Imlil, meaning you return to Marrakech with time to explore the city in the afternoon and enjoy a celebratory meal in the evening.

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during the times of year when this trip operates. In very hot locations, high humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. In cold locations, where daytime temperatures are consistently below freezing (0C/32F), it will likely be even colder at night. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool/warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very hot or cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at more moderate temperatures. In hot conditions, people may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke (opens in new tab), and in severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia (opens in new tab). Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with extremely hot and cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Absolutely incredible tour from start to finish. Mustapha and Sammir were fantastic as guides and suited the pace for our group every day. Would highly recommend this length of tour as a great mix between challenging and acclimatisation.

This was my second to the High Atlas with Much Better Adventures/Aztat Treks, and it was just as excellent! I was a bit worried about making the ascent of Toubkal, but our guides were fantastic, keeping the pace slow and making sure we were all feeling ok. I would definitely recommend doing this trip over the shorter Toubkal treks - the extra day really does help acclimatise you, although I'd advise bringing some altitude sickness medication just in case. Accommodation each night was comfortable (just remember to bring earplugs!) and the food was great (just remember to bring snacks). Pre-trip communication by Mouna was clear and the transfers between the riads and the airport all seemed to go smoothly.

We had an absolutely fantastic time hiking in the Atlas mountains. The guides looked after everything, down to the smallest detail. The itinerary for us was perfect, we got to see more of the Atlas mountains and felt much better prepared for the Toubkal summit as we had the time to acclimate over the previous two days.

Wow what an incredible trip!!! Our guides Saaid and Mustafa were amazing, they went above and beyond to make sure we all had the best trip possible and we can’t thank them enough! I always felt like we were in safe hands with them and they kept spirits high throughout the whole trip! The hike itself is challenging, with steep inclines and high altitudes making it tricky but so worth it! I was also pleasantly surprised by the refuges which had hot showers and plugs! My top tips would be: bring plenty of snacks and take walking poles (they will be your best friend!)

This was the best holiday I've been on. Yes it's hard work but well worth it. Met some fantastic people and now friends. Can not recommend enough.

We had the best experience with our guides Saaid and Mustafa. They were both so supporting and kind and helped in everyway possible with more than just the treck. I would recommend the week climb due to having the time to acclimatize to the altitude and seeing a whole separate side to the atlas mountains (rather than going up and down on the same path). The food was good, make sure to bring extra snacks for energy (jelly cubes saved us on summit day). Listen to the guides as they summit all the time and know the mountain like the back of their hand. Such an incredible experience - thank you Saaid and Mustafa!!!!!

Guides were Said and Mustafa they were great. They were caring and thought about our needs and keeps us entertained. They explained things very well. Food was amazing and healthy which was more than we needed. Overall a very good experience. I also enjoyed the company of our group, it was nice meeting you all.

It was the best experience. The guides Siad and Mustafa were fantastic. They set the pace, made sure everyone was okay. Even went with one of our team who needed to go back down due to altitude sickness. The climb itself was long days but wasnt the most technical. This is great if you want to try a 4,000m mountain and you need a good level of fitness. Go for it!

This trip was fabulous. We went as a group of experienced hikers and found the pace Mostafa gave was just right. We acclimatised properly and saw some beautiful places in the Atlas Mountains where other Toubkal tours didn’t go. The first refuge was spotless and we saw the stars so clearly. We were well fed on the hike with plenty of fruit and vegetables and traditional Moroccan food. Samir and Mostafa were great guides. We summited Toubkal at sunrise and the views were spectacular. Great trip. Would highly recommend.

Had a great time trekking and going up Toubkal. Aztat treks were super well organised and our guides very helpful. Great achievement and definitely recommend!

    Charlotte R. October 2026
I had the absolute best time on this trip. I was a little nervous going into it due to the altitude but the guides soon put me at ease and we travelled at a pace that allowed us to acclimatise. Although summit day was long (around 11 hours of hiking), it was incredible and so magical to summit with the first snowfall of the year. The guides were very knowledgeable and the transfers and Riad in Marrakesh worked perfectly.

I did the trek last week and absolutely loved it. Although I couldn’t do final ascent due to altitude sickness I was well supported by both the guides Lasaan and Saaid throughout. The food platter was extensive with lot of choices for vegetarian as well as vegan options. All the refuges and guesthouses on the trail were of good quality. Overall an enjoyable experience.
  • A great tour of the Atlas mountains

    Sarah O. October 2026
This tour felt like the perfect amount of time to see the Atlas mountains. The loop route meant we didn't retrace our footsteps and experienced something new each day. The highlight was definitely sunrise on Mount Toubkal, but I was surprised at how well we were catered for on the mountainside for lunch. The guides really take care of you and are incredible people.

I was part of the team whom climbed Toubkal between the 21st - 23rd of September. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip as the party itself were good and the guides were fantastic. Both guides were incredibly helpful with knowledge and support. The food was also very good which was a pleasant surprise.
  • What a trek!

    Dean S. October 2026
Superb trek in the Atlas mountains. The guides were fantastic and looked after everyone to make sure we all stuck together, and food/timings/breaks were so well organised. The longer route to the top was good as we didnt see anyone on the 1st 2 days until we got to the refuges, unlike the mass procession of people we passed on the main/quick route when we were heading down. Small group of 9 trekkers (and 2 guides) meant it was a nice friendly group that you got to know well. and like minded travellers from different backgrounds made it a great experience
  • Amazing!!!

    Thomas K. September 2026
Amazing group, amazing communication from muchbetter and the tour company muchbetter used, amazing trip, amazing views, amazing guides. All round amazing trip would definitely recommend and wasn’t too difficult although there were challenging parts. As part of our group we sat outside one evening and star gazed which was my personal favourite part of the trip other than summiting of course.
  • Excellent guides

    Lauren C. September 2026
The guides were absolutely excellent and we couldn't have done it without them. The organisation was exceptional and they accommodated a change in pick up location. Only criticism is that there was some 'climbing' over large bolders on the climb to the submit and therefore the description of 'non technical climb' although factually accurate probably doesn't give a completely accurate picture
  • Amazing adventure

    Kristi K. September 2026
This was my second trip with MBA and, once again, it was almost flawless! Everything was really well organised from start to finish, and as a vegetarian I always felt well catered for, even in some very remote places. The first refuge was excellent. The second… well, just go prepared to get very cosy with your neighbour and bring some good earplugs! 😂 I’m fairly fit and walk at least 5 miles every day, but I also added an hour of 12% incline walking 2x a week at the gym to my training in preparation for this trip. I was very glad I did, as it definitely helped on summit day when the path gets pretty steep. If you're thinking about this trip, its definitely achievable for those with a good level of fitness! Book it! For me, the heat on the first day and the altitude ended up being more of a challenge than the walking itself. Definitely glad I chose the longer option over the weekend Toubkal trip. I talked to a few people doing the shorter trip and some didn't summit because of altitude sickness and it seemed like they went at a relentless pace. Our guides were fantastic and really bent over backwards to make sure everyone was supported, comfortable and confident throughout. I felt very well looked after from start to finish.

Brilliant 4 day hike around the Atlas Mountains and early morning climb to the summit of Toubkal. Mohammed and Sayeed were awesome guides who gave encouragement, support, patience and added to the incredible team spirit of our small group. The complete Aztet local crew were fab, from Mules, Cook, Riad and planning. Would recommend this trip to anyone, but training is key, as it’s not easy.
  • A fabulous adventure

    Laura C. July 2026
When signing up for this challenge I was really hoping to achieve something that would feel like an achievement. This trip did not fail to deliver. The trekking was challenging in the heat but the trip was so well planned that after day 1 we were in the shade and only had the altitude and not heat to deal with. I was pleasantly surprised my the first refuge and the second was as expected. If you pretend you are back on a school camping trip then you will be fine. I can't rate our guides highly enough. Mohammed and Abdul were, knowledgeable, kind and considerate. They read our ability as a group and set a perfect pace for us. They clearly know what there doing. They were also kind, funny and just generally great people. The food was also amazing given the limitations of cooking on a mountain side. If you are considering this trip then I would say just book it. For anyone with a good base fitness level this is a challenge but amazing adventure. Hopefully you will also luck out with a fab group like I did.
  • Incredible Experience

    Peter B. June 2026
This was an amazing trip! From the welcome tea in the first Riad to summiting Mt Toubkal, this trip was so enjoyable. It felt like a real challenge and our guides Mohammed and Abdul were great, they went above and beyond to help and did everything to ensure we had what we needed. The food provided, in such remote locations, was excellent throughout the trip, and felt very authentic throughout. Would definitely recommend the slightly longer tour as you take in more of the traditional culture. We were very lucky to have such a fun group!!

A great trip, well organised and executed. Our guides on the ground, Abdul and Mohammed, were professional, personable, strong and reliable. Very lucky with the group, everyone got on well and a fine time was had. It is quite a hard trek, a couple of long days and some are affected more than others by the altitude, so prepare well and you’ll make it.

I had a fantastic time hiking to the top of Mt Toubkal. Perfect pace for me, good food, friendly group of hikers. The accommodation was better than expected, clean and very nice. The hike was tough but the guides set the pace right.

Huge thanks to Much Better Adventures for making the trip unforgettable. From the moment I arrived in Marrakech to last all my itinerary was taken care of. The guides, team on the route were absolutely tremendous with their experience and knowledge of Mount Toubkal second to none. I would recommend this adventure to others without a doubt but please remember that you need a good level of fitness. Age is no restriction as I'm in my 50's so what are you waiting for, get out there!!!

I loved this trip, it was the perfect combination of exploring Marrakesh and adventure in the Atlas Mountains. (Please read David J review as he summed it up perfectly) Tanemmirt to the guides Lahcen and Hassan for looking after us and also Mohammed for cooking and preparing all our delicious food.
  • Early May

    Omar T. June 2026
The views were excellent, the people were friendly, and the (non-vegetarian) food was generally good. However, there were a couple of issues: 1. Conditions and communication: We went in early May and encountered significant snow from halfway up the route, which made conditions much more difficult than expected. The group had to take a detour to a smaller summit, extending the day to over 12 hours of hiking (compared to the 7 hours described). This was extremely demanding, and three people in the group (including myself) were completely exhausted afterward, which affected our ability to continue with the main summit attempt the following day. Communication beforehand about how conditions might impact the itinerary was limited, aside from a brief note that we “may need crampons. ” 2. Vegetarian food options: While I appreciate the challenges of preparing food in remote conditions, the vegetarian meals generally lacked sufficient protein. After the first day (when lentils were provided), the following days offered limited protein sources, making it difficult to maintain energy levels during the demanding hikes. As a result, I switched away from the vegetarian option despite it being my preference.
  • How to make friends up a mountain.

    Alison C. June 2026
A challenging trek - don't under-estimate the level of fitness needed. Sadly, one of our group had to turn back after day 1. Our guides; Mohammed 1 and Mohammed 2 were awesome, expertly looking after us all across the unexpected snow (ice) fields we met - in June! Do not be put off by some of the online reviews of the refuges. They were basic, but had hot showers, flush toilets and decent food. It was possible to purchase soft drinks & chocolate bars at both refuges. Don't skimp on taking extra layers up to the summit as it gets pretty chilly very quickly once you stop moving. The negative part of the trip : We were housed in a different Riad in Marrakesh from the rest of the group which was a real shame, especially at the end of the hike when you have all bonded through the shared Mount Toubkal experience. Our Riad was only a 5 minute walk away from where the rest of the group were staying, and we were able to join our group for breakfast on the final day. Although very comfortable, our Riad was a lower quality accommodation. Overall, a great trip with like-minded people who took everything in their stride (literally). I'm already planning my next Much Better Adventure!
  • Well organised and immersive trip.

I met lovely people along the way - both fellow travellers and staff. The food was amazing. Whilst communication of the daily plan was more ad hoc, I trusted our guides had it all in hand - and they did! They were brilliant.

FAQs

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your ascent of Toubkal. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take up on the hike with you at your local guide's base there.

You will be provided with safe drinking water while on the mountain. You should bring a couple of water bottles or a flask to fill up with water (or mint tea) from the refuges.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with local charity, Spana, (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip includes locations where temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during different parts of the itinerary. In some areas, you may face high daytime temperatures, strong sun, and humidity with limited shade. Elsewhere – especially at higher elevations – temperatures may drop below freezing, particularly at night.

These extremes can affect your physical performance and increase the risk of heat-related issues such as dehydration or heat stroke, or cold-related risks like frostbite and hypothermia. Your guide will manage the pace, monitor group wellbeing, and adjust the plan when needed to keep everyone safe.

We recommend considering how you personally respond to heat and cold, and speaking with a healthcare professional if you have any conditions that could be affected. Packing the right gear for both climates is essential, and arriving early may help your body acclimatise more comfortably – especially if you're coming from a more moderate climate.

Spring and autumn temperatures in Marrakech average 10-25°C, and it rains a small amount (roughly seven days each month). From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15-35°C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasion – so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

In the Atlas Mountains, from March to October daytime temperatures average 25-30°C but it cools off considerably at night, and the higher you go the colder it gets (you may even need gloves on a summit day in August!) Night time temperatures can drop below freezing at and above the mountain refuge. Afternoon storms are always possible, but they are usually quick and generally don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 126kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
