Trip level explained

Level 6

Challenging-Tough

This trek requires a good level of fitness. You must be capable of hiking all day up paths of moderate difficulty with steep, loose sections. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the loose footing and high altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts and can be mentally challenging. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile!

What will I need to carry?

Mules will carry your main overnight luggage during the trek and you will need to carry your daypack with your daytime essentials (extra layer, snacks, water etc.). For the welfare of the mules, please ensure your main overnight luggage is in a soft-sided bag and weighs no more than 15kg.

High Altitude Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m. At this altitude some people may experience symptoms associated with Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Previous experience at high altitude is not necessarily an indicator of future performance. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with altitude by carefully managing the rate of ascent and the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided. Owing to the nature of this trip, it is essential that your personal travel insurance policy provides cover up to the maximum altitude visited on this trip as well as emergency medical evacuation by helicopter.

Climate Factors To Consider

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during the times of year when this trip operates. In very hot locations, high humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influence the body’s ability to cool down. In cold locations, where daytime temperatures are consistently below freezing (0C/32F), it will likely be even colder at night. Personal care should be taken to keep as cool/warm as possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration and nutrition. Very hot or cold temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at more moderate temperatures. In hot conditions, people may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke (opens in new tab), and in severe cold conditions people may experience symptoms associated with Exposure, Frostbite and Hypothermia (opens in new tab). Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with extremely hot and cold temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transport to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before travelling.

All travellers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Excellent trip to the Top of Mount Toubkal, we were well looked after by our superb guides Ali & Abdu & their team. Great food on the 2 days. Communications leading up to the trip was excellent. Great memories made ⛰️🥾🥾🌞👌

Had a great trip to Toubkal with MBA. Everything was perfectly organised from the airport pick up to drop off we didn’t need to worry about a thing as it was all arranged for us. The guides Mohamed and mustapha were great, very knowledgable and friendly and set a pace suitable for the full group meaning that we all made it to the top. Accommodation was good, even the mountain refuge was better than expected. Food was also nice, mainly pasta, chickpeas, lentils and some tuna and chicken. The hike itself was challenging but I’d say doable for someone of moderate fitness. The views at the top were worth all the hard work. Overall a great trip and would definitely recommend!

Fantastic short trip away which leaves you with a real sense of accomplishment! Our guides Mustafa and Mohamed paced things well and were cheerful throughout. The riad also exceeded expectations Well worth the adventure.

What a trip! From start to finish the local team were amazing - from organising transfers to the cooks, porters and our amazing mountain guide. Riads were beautiful - the refuge was as you would expect but don't let that put you off - it's one night for a great experience!

First time doing a trip with MBA. Can't fault it, was truly a once in a lifetime expirience. Everything was super clear and made so easy, from airport pick up, to transfers to the mountain, guides were super friendly and knowledgeable. The night at the refuge really felt like a team attempting something special. We sadly didn't get the sunrise we were hoping for due to cloud but was still so worth it to be hiking through the atlas mountains and seeing the valley from above. A truly amazing expirience and will be back with MBA as soon as I can

What an amazing weekend! All the staff at Much Better Adventures were so attentive and I had a brilliant experience. Not going to lie, the ascent and descent is pretty brutal but I'd strongly recommend doing this adventure.

I enjoyed the trip, hard work doing 35km in just over 24 hours with only 4-5 hours sleep. Downhill is hard on the knees as its very steep. Great views. Only negative was that our group was accomodated in different Riads before the trip and after which was really poor and prevented the bonding we all wanted to have.

Having never climbed anything like Mt Toubkal, I was nervous going into the trip more for the altitude side, and how I would cope with this. The information given before the trip, not just off the trip page but in the Whatsapp group with the tour guide and other travellers with experience really helped me to pack and prepare. Everything was smooth and flawless from airport pick up, to information on timings on meal, when to leave the riad, and during the hike itself. All the staff and guides had great knowledge and were very good at keeping the group together and on time based on the pace and terrain The Atlas mountains were incredible, starting from Imlil after an initial steep climb past the waterfalls, the paths were rocky but easy to navigate. The lunch on the way up was a mix of lentils, rice, salad, cheese and breads, with lots of water provided across the hike at several stops. Arriving at the mountain refuge from the valley was a sight with the mountains either side, and having Toubkal in front of us all the way up, showing us just how high we had to go! After a great chicken tagine dinner, we bedded down for an early 2:20am breakfast with the climb starting with several other groups at 3am. Definitely take ear plugs for the dorm rooms, as while I was perfectly comfortable you are sharing with other groups! Also make sure you take toilet roll for the loos at the refuge! The night hike was my first, and the guides really put you at ease, with a consistent pace, stops along the way, and with the good dry weather we had, we summitted for sunrise which was just amazing after 4 hours of ascent. After spending a bit of time for pictures, snacks and to take in just how high we were, it was 3 hours back down to the mountain refuge for lunch, and another 4 hours back to Imlil. Personally I found the altitude tough, with a few headaches along the way, but it was well worth the effort for the summit! Everything was well planned and timed, and it helped that I was part of a really supportive and talkative group, that shared their experiences, and medical supplies when needed! If you have a desire to climb Mt Toubkal then I'd definitely recommend this MBA trip!

  • "You're going on your own?"

    Joe S. October 2026
No - you're never alone in a small group - 12 plus guides. Everyone has a story, reason for being there and over the days this gets shared. The trip is very well organised and offers terrific value for money. Mouna's organisation and messaging was great and Mustafa and Ali (guides) were excellent on the hike - firm when needed and fair the rest of the time. Its a hard job, not just physically, but reigning in over-enthusiasm to keep the pace very steady so everyone gets to the top. I dont hesitate to recommend this trip; yes there are other companies and orgaisers, including locally, but why bother spending time and effort researching when everything has been done for you here. MBA raks this as a very hard trip; its subjective - I would have said it was a '4' but then the grind and long hours are not new to me. And it is a hike, not a climb; a good path, slippy with gravel occasionally but otherwise rocky and wide, the long section from Ilmil to the mountain lodge goes by fast enough as does the lodge-summit-lodge. Get your head and legs in gear for a long trudge back to Ilmil thereafter! BTW all you are carrying is a daysack with your fuel/water and a shell. Tip: avoid the lentils at the lunch stop on the way up if you want to avoid 1000 farts over 24hrs :-)
  • Best guide ever!

    Marie H. September 2026
Very well organised. Picked up and dropped off efficiently with no problems. In terms of the climb, I really struggled, and our guide was supportive, helpful, gave me great techniques on breathing and walking on the very uneven ground. He got the timings perfect! The food we got was absolutely yummy - perfect for an extreme physical activity. I will definitely recommend the company to friends and family.

    Thomas N. September 2026
Another amazing experience with MBA, last year the hut to hut in the Alps and this year Mountain Toubkal in Morocco. The rating was spot on whilst shorter it was a bit more challenging. To think I achieved all that in just over a weekend, an amazing trip, well planned, never wanted for anything and always more food than you can eat. The guide kept us very safe and controlled the group excellently. Amazing experience with an amazing bunch of people, 10/10.

Had a brilliant time climbing mount Toubkal in a weekend! Travelled on my own and climbed with a very friendly group of people who all made me feel very welcome. Guided were great and the accommodation was also really good for the price paid. Would definitely recommend for people wanting to try a 4000m mountain.

    Gunpreet September 2026
My first ever trek and that too the best ever I could expect. Both my guides - Mohammed and Syed were absolutely amazing. Syed specially did so much hard work on me by motivating me, managing my AMS, guiding me throughout, came with me slow pace and didnt let me give up. He ensured I did the summit so can’t thank him enough for all his efforts and support. The whole experience was such a well managed one and I loved every bit of it. Much better adventures are one of the best and highly recommended as they make the whole experience just a beautiful memory of a lifetine.

Fantastic adventure. It’s a tough climb, and day two is a long day back, but very rewarding. And kind of mind blowing that you can get up there and back in such a short weekend. Loved that everything is taken care of (transfers, food, etc) such a stress free trip. Special thanks to our amazing guide Mustafa!

I absolutely loved the Toubkal trip! Ot was amazing that everything was sorted for you from start to finish. Our guides were amazing, with a special shout out to mustapha ouhammou who helped the group so much and was super happy and helpful. The summit was amazing and the pace was great, I was somewhat worried about the food with dietary requirements but it was all amazing. Would love to go back in winter!

Here’s a rephrased version: A really enjoyable trip, and well organised throughout. Our guide, Mustafa, was fantastic — friendly, entertaining, and clearly knew his stuff. The trek was beautiful, and the refuge exceeded our expectations. Day two is a long one, made tougher by the lack of sleep at the refuge, but reaching the summit for sunrise made it completely worthwhile — the views are breathtaking. The Riad itself is lovely, and most of the staff were warm and helpful. Overall, a superb trip and excellent value for money.

FAQs

Absolutely! We recognise that you may want to leave some of the kit you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your ascent of Toubkal. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take up on the hike with you at your local guide's base there.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with local charity, Spana, (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also provides a monthly clinic which offers free veterinary care to the animals and the distribution of humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from 17th February to 19th March 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations at or above 2500m, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group wellbeing, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatise can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

This trip includes locations where temperatures can range from extremely hot to extremely cold during different parts of the itinerary. In some areas, you may face high daytime temperatures, strong sun, and humidity with limited shade. Elsewhere – especially at higher elevations – temperatures may drop below freezing, particularly at night.

These extremes can affect your physical performance and increase the risk of heat-related issues such as dehydration or heat stroke, or cold-related risks like frostbite and hypothermia. Your guide will manage the pace, monitor group wellbeing, and adjust the plan when needed to keep everyone safe.

We recommend considering how you personally respond to heat and cold, and speaking with a healthcare professional if you have any conditions that could be affected. Packing the right gear for both climates is essential, and arriving early may help your body acclimatise more comfortably – especially if you're coming from a more moderate climate.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with (opens in new tab). You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers are familiar with the practical information provided on the Government’s FCDO website (opens in new tab), where current travel advice can be found by searching for the applicable destination(s).

For customers joining this trip from other international destinations – please also read the official travel advice applicable to your country of residence/origin, as this may differ.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information (opens in new tab) and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

Spring and autumn temperatures in Marrakech average 10 - 25 °C, and it rains a small amount roughly 7 days each month. From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 15 - 35 °C, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 45°C on occasions so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if travelling at this time of year.

In the Atlas Mountains from March to October daytime temperatures average 25 - 30°C but it cools off considerably at night, and the higher you go the colder it gets (you may even need gloves on a summit day in August!) Nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing at and above the mountain refuge. Afternoon storms are always possible, but they are usually quick and generally don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 195kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust (opens in new tab) to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre (opens in new tab) programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here (opens in new tab).
